Competency Assessment

Show Support | 2nd August 2018

Dear SHS Crew Chiefs and Senior Crew Members,

All Senior SHS Crew Members should become familiar with the online Competency Assessment and use it when required.

The Competency Assessment can be found under the WHS drop down on the Show Support Website.

There are 3 uses for the Competency Assessment:

1. SHS Crew Members on their first Shift for Show Support must be competency assessed.
2. SHS Crew Members must be competency assessed for general work every 12 months.
3. SHS Crew Members performing High Risk work must be competency assessed every 6 months.

Examples of High Risk work are: Fork Lift, Telehandler, EWP, Scissorlift, Rigging and Scaffolding.
High Risk Activities require a High Risk License, issued by the relevant authority.

The Senior Crew Member should liaise with the Client Onsite Contact before the Shift commences and conduct the Competency Assessment for all Crew Members that require it.

If there is no Senior Crew Member available on the Shift, then the Client’s Onsite Contact must conduct the Competency Assessment, or the equivalent used by their organisation, or some type of acknowledgement that they are satisfied that the Crew Member is competent in the tasks that they have booked them to undertake.

Competency Assessments for SHS Crew Members on their first shift for Show Support are conducted during the Orientation Induction for those Crew Members.

Competency Assessments for High Risk and General work are conducted by:
1. Ensuring the Crew Member has been trained in the relevant SWMS, and;
2. Ensuring that Crew Member is following the approved steps in the Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) for the Activity they are undertaking.

In cases where it is not practical to assess that Crew Members are able to follow the approved steps in the SWMS prior to the commencement of their Shift, the procedure is to observe the SHS Crew Member performing their tasks and to ensure that the tasks are being performed according to the relevant steps of the Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS).

In this way, it is not necessary for the person conducting the assessment to be qualified in the High Risk Activity, only to be competent in the training according to the procedures and SWMS of Show Support.

In cases where the SHS Crew Member does not meet the criteria for competency, then prevent them working immediately and contact Show Support operations on 0295562011 to advise that the Crew Member has not been deemed competent.

Take the Crew member aside and retrain them in the correct way to perform their task according the relevant steps of the Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) before allowing the Crew Member to continue that task.

If the SHS Crew Member fails a second competency assessment in the space of one shift, notify Show Support operations to remove that particular Activity from the Crew Member’s profile. This will prevent that Crew Member from working on that High Risk Activity for Show Support until they have passed the Competency Assessment.

Only submit the Competency Assessment for Crew Members that have passed.

Advise SHS Operations immediately for any Crew Members that were unsuccessful and complete the Feedback Form with details of any Crew Members who were unsuccessful.
